Drill Teams and Clinics

Heidi Hampton Young, Drill Coach for both the current American Cruisers drill team and our previous Spanish gaited team, has been a rider on both loping and gaited drill teams. A good coach learns what judges are looking for – so she became a judge too.

Now Heidi travels to various corners of the country to serve as a judge for national and state events like WLRCA and PNWDTA, Texas Super Ride, Kentuckey’s regional events, Sunshine State in Florda, Georgia’s State events, and the Western States Championship in California; Summers are busy!

And returning to coach and present clinics for some of those teams, so they can perform even better, has been one of the best parts of the journey.

Whether a drill routine is performed for a judge, or for an audience, this is one complex and challenging sport. So lots of respect goes out to each and every rider putting it all out there in the dirt!

We are gearing up for a new 2022 drill season with costume changes and new changes in our drill routine. Anyone interested in joining please step up. Any gaited breeds are used on the drill team. We welcome newcomers, Ya All Come!

Equus & Overture

October 14, 2022, The Idaho Horse Park’s yearly black tie gala fund-raising event complete with catered vitals and wine, and lots of horsey entertainment. This year the Southern Comfort Gaited Horse Club was invited to show off their gaited horse drill team, The American Cruisers. Gaited horses included Fox Trotters, Tennesse Walkers, Spotted Saddle Horses, and a Rockie. Our drill coach, Heidi Hampton Young did a super job getting this routine embedded in ours and our horses’ brains! A better video will appear soon
